Dear Vera, could you please introduce Shopee services to Chinese companies?

Shopee is a leading e-commerce platform in Southeast Asia and Taiwan, which has expanded its reach to 7 business markets, including Singapore, Malaysia, Philippines, Taiwan, Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam. In 2017, its GMV reached $4.1 billion, with a year-on-year revenue growth of 258%.

Also, the Shopee App remains to be among the highest-downloaded e-commerce mobile Apps. As an e-commerce platform, we provide all the cross-border sellers in China with a one-stop-shop solution, offering logistics, payment, language, data, ERP supports, which can free venders who start selling on Shopee from extra efforts.

What’s your expectations towards e-commerce customers in China?

Shopee’s major e-commerce markets in Southeast Asia and Taiwan, with a total population exceeding 650 million, are development at a fast pace. According to the reports issued by Google and Temasek, between 2017 and 2015, the e-commerce market in Southeast Asia is expected to grow at an annual compound rate of 32 percent, reaching a transaction amount of $88 billion.

Shopee will work with our e-commerce cooperative partners to provide Chinese venders and brand owners with a one-stop-shop solution, aiming to help more and more Chinese sellers seize market opportunities and venture into overseas markets.

How long have Shopee been active in the Chinese market?

Shopee has entered Chinese market for more than 2 years. Starting its e-commerce business in Shenzhen from the beginning of 2016, so far, Shopee has established offices in Shenzhen, Shanghai and Hong Kong.

In your opinion, in 2019, what is the greatest trend in Chinese e-commerce market?

Based on the industry data, in the first half of 2018, e-commerce’s transaction volume reached new record, with an annual increase of 26%. And it is worth mention that cross-border e-commerce exports’ turnover accounts for 77% of total e-commerce transactions, with a year-on-year growth rate of 26%. Therefore, as long as the domestic cross-border e-commerce environment remains overall positive, cross-border e-commerce’s development speed will sustain, especially for emerging markets in Southeast Asia.

What do you think about the future of Chinese brands in global marketplace?

With the progressive diminution of the outflow of dividends in China, as well as with the megatrend that cross-border e-commerce exports are rapidly growing, exporting products oversea has become a new way for Chinese enterprises to seek profit increases. For that reason, Chinese brands have actively restructured themselves in order to expand international markets.

Southeast Asia, as the major priority of China’s infrastructure investment project (based on Belt and Road initiative launched in 2013), has close ties with Chinese regions. And since the culture difference among China and other countries in Southeast Asia is relatively small, Chinese products can enjoy great acceptance in local regions. Additionally, consumers in Southeast Asia possess diverse requirements towards products, in other words, they are seeking not only for cost-effective products but for high-quality products, which provides opportunities for Chinese brands.
