Alibaba launched the world’s first AI clothing store



On July 4, 2018, Alibaba engineers launched the world’s first artificial intelligence clothing store, FashionAI Concept Store, in Hong Kong


In the future, 500 million consumers of Taobao will experience AI dressing recommendation online and offline. In fact, this is the first time that China fashion industry has attempted to interpret “human dressing” via artificial intelligence technology. This is ahead of any country.


What is FashionAI Concept Store?


FashionAI concept store seems to be no different from ordinary stores, having rich shelves and spacious fitting rooms. The users enter the store by scanning Taobao ID and binding identity information. When a product is set in front of a smart mirror and the mirror can identify the product information, it will give a variety of clothing combination.

Interestingly, the matching on screen is personalized. On the mirror screen, it shows that the blue jeans bought last year are matched with the store’s high heels.

After hanging out and picking up three or five pieces of favorite clothing, what do consumers do if they want to try it on? At the FashionAI concept store, consumers don’t have to be as messy as in a normal clothing store. As long as the consumers select the size, and click “Try” on screen, all the fitting information can be synchronized to the backroom warehouse and salesclerk will put the prepared clothes in the customers’ fitting room.


It may be the easiest and most desirable way for customers to go to the fitting room without clothes.


In each fitting room, the consumer will have a huge fitting mirror. Whether consumers want to buy, change the size and change the color, they can click on the fitting mirror to complete. After receiving the order, the salesperson will prepare the clothes for consumers.

FashionAI is not only a new retail experience, but also a complete methodology for understanding fashion with algorithms. Can algorithm understand fashion? In fact, although fashion seems complicated and subjective, when the algorithm continues to solve the problem, it can still clearly organize the framework of the clothing system. FashionAI transforms the abstract aesthetics into the repeatable methodology and re-constructs it to understand fashion and fashion trend.

In the future, via the algorithm, Taobao hopes that the user ‘s  purchase data of clothes is not only offline, but also online and digitized.
