Apple’s new iOS 11.3 update looks to Chinese commuters. Thanks to some new features, in fact, those who use the subway in Shanghai and Beijing can use Apple Pay on iPhone and Apple Watch to use, and pay, the various rates of public transport.
The Apple Pay Transit Express feature allows users to add new transit cards or, alternatively, transfer the balance on their current card directly from the mobile wallet. Commuters can recharge their card for a minimum of 10 RMB and a maximum of RMB 500.
The functionality of Apple Pay had already been tested last year on public transport in Hangzhou and Guangzhou. Now, with the addition of Shanghai and Beijing, the apple offer extends to two other main centres in China.
The market is expected to be competitive, with Alipay and Tencent in clear advantage; and there’s the Android variable.
But despite this innovation, Apple knows it is facing a tough fight. In recent months, in fact, Alipay and Tencent, with WeChat, have also landed in the payment market for public transport, respectively in Shanghai and Guangzhou.
The statistics indicate that 90% of users use the mobile payment of the two Chinese apps. Their popularity is also recognized by Apple, which allows you to pay with such methods within its store in China.
Another obstacle to overcome for Apple, will be that of the predominance of Android in the country. As a result, this means fewer users will be able to access the mobile payment processed by the Cupertino house.
