The new airport will handle 45 million passengers a year by 2022 and 72 million by 2025
Beijing Daxing International Airport is about to be open, which is expected to be completed on June 30, 2019. Operations, then, should begin on September 30th, as stated by Feng Zhenglin – Director of the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC).
Zheng confirmed that the construction of the main body of the airport has been completed, while the interior furnishings activities are still underway, as well as the installation and testing of the plants.
While waiting for the actual work to begin, the CAAC has confirmed that 10 out of the 32 approved international airlines will maneuver from this new mega-airport. Among the most important routes there will also be popular ones for Russia (St. Petersburg), South Korea (Busan) and Egypt (Cairo). “The new airport will have to handle 45 million passengers a year by 2022 and 72 million by 2025,” Feng said.
The head of the CAAC also added that with the construction of a “safe, green, smart and humanistic” airport, the new aviation hub was built according to the standards for the major modern international airports.
It aims for a final capacity of 100 million passengers a year
The airport, designed to become the largest in the world, has a long-term plan to expand the annual passenger capacity to 100 million. Li Jianhua, project manager of the construction of the main terminal, said that he and his team have completed the most complex mechanical and electrical installation in the world.
Suffice it to say that 247,000 electromechanical devices have been installed, 1,800 kilometers of cables and wires, as well as millions of connectors and air pipes covering a total area of almost 73 standard soccer fields, up to the central area of the largest single terminal of the world.
During the peak of construction, confirming this size, more than 8,000 workers worked simultaneously at the main terminal in one day.
An integrated transport network is also ready
The main terminal of the airport has a huge roof with a steel structure covering 180,000 square meters, the largest of its kind in the world. It took 80 days for the builders to install such a large ceiling with the help of robotic measurement.
According to Li, interior furniture should be finished by April 30 and fire control acceptance control is scheduled for May. The final acceptance of the construction would begin in mid-June.
Together with the new airport, an integrated transport network has been planned, including seven highway transport projects, interurban rail transport, high-speed rail and underground. The new airport will be connected to Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei by rail transport.
