A ByteDance spokesman said the company has no plans to release an app for independent search engines
ByteDance, the most precious Chinese startup, less than two weeks ago started recruiting technical staff to build its own search engine from scratch, separated from the general search function in its Toutiao content aggregator app.
Now, the company’s search portal is online, although it is only optimized for mobile devices. The search engine is called Toutiao Search and has a tagline that translates as “search for what you want to see”. A ByteDance spokesman said the company has no plans to release an app for independent search engines, at least for the moment.
ByteDance’s entry into this space has had a negative impact on advertising revenue for competitors
Toutiao Search is designed to function as a generic search engine, but also highlights the contents shared on the ByteDance platforms, including Weitoutiao, where verified users of Toutiao share public posts, in addition to the Douyin app, which is the analogue home of the popular TikTok globally.
During the recent earnings appeal of Sogou, the second largest Chinese search engine, CEO Xiaochuan Wang admitted that ByteDance’s entry into this space had a negative impact on the advertising revenue of the research for his company. Sogou reported that his total revenue increased by only 1% on an annual basis to $ 303.6 million.
