Liège is ready to host first EU Cross Border E-Commerce Forum: BRI and cross-border e-commerce the major trends in international business. The event will be held on December 11-12, 2019 at Liège Airport

Do you want to be among the cross-border e-commerce leaders?Europe is ready to embrace a new cooperation with China and is drawing a win-win strategy. On the other side Beijing is ready to strengthen trade dialogue following Belt and Road Initiative. In this framework, Belgium was the first country in Europe to understand the great potential of international cooperation and cross-border.

That’s why last year Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba inked an agreement with Belgium to open its first Electronic World Trade Platform (eWTP) in Europe with the aim of promoting long-term cross-border trade. And today, Liège is ready to host the first EU Cross – Border E-commerce Forum (EU CBEC).

Under the theme “Cross-Border E-Commerce through the BRI”, the forum is to be linked with the momentum the Belt and Road Initative is having in Europe – as well as across the whole world – while also focusing on a major trends in international business: cross-border e-commerce.

China and the EU are ranked as the world’s two largest exporters but sit third and fifth on the table for global imports. The EU’s trade with China hit a 10-year high last year. Exports to China hit €210 billion, up from €78 billion in 2008, while imports reached €395 billion compared with €215 a decade earlier. That’s why representatives from both the public sector and the private sector will attend CBEC and they will be addressing the most pressing topics in the industry and their insights on how to best engage with China within the BRI framework – for both import and export.

Why Wallonia and the city of Liège? The natural gateway between China and EU.

Liège will become the main hub for cross-border e-commerce, especially from China. Thanks to its high-quality infrastructure, such as the Liège airport and its convenient land and water transportation, Wallonia (the French-speaking region of Belgium) is the natural gateway between East and West. In addition, the city of Liège was recently chosen by Cainiao Network, the logistics arm of Alibaba Group, to become its logistics hub in Europe, making Wallonia an even more central player on the international trade stage.

It is only natural that the first CBEC event is held here.  Moreover, the Liège airport is Europe’s 8th freight hub. In 2018, it transported 870000 tons of cargo and it will receive 50 million of euros of investments for the year 2019-2020. The Airport is situated in the heart of the Amsterdam-Paris-Frankfurt golden triangle, a highly dense area of production in Europe. All of the largest western European cities are easily reachable in less than one day by truck, which translates in almost 400 million consumers. It connects a large number of airports in Europe, North America, the Middle East, Asia and Oceania and over 66% of European freight transits through the airport.

EU CBEC FORUM wants to become the first and most prominent platform on cross-border e-commerce in Europe.

This event will be launched thanks to the cooperation between Cifnews雨果网 (the first and largest Chinese media specialized on cross-border e-commerce with its international team based in Padova, Italy) and AWEX (Wallonia Export-Investment Agency) but other partners would join it.
