The conquest of the coffee market in China continues and Luckin Coffee, the Chinese coffee startup, has partnered with the Tencent QQ instant messaging platform to open its first QQ-themed store in Shenzhen.
Dubbed 1999 beta, the store is decorated with the theme and images of QQ dating back to the beginning of this century, to evoke nostalgic feelings in Chinese Millennials. The idea is to associate QQ’s coffee and work with Luckin Coffee. For this reason, a copy of the Tencent founder’s desk, Pony Ma, was placed inside 1999, along with the first version of the penguin mascot.
The challenge between Luckin and the veteran Starbucks continues
In the challenge with Starbucks, Luckin Coffee is thus ensuring its closeness to the Chinese business world. In addition, the Chinese startup confirmed its expansion target and stated that in January of this year it wants to overtake Starbucks as the country’s largest coffee chain operator, increasing the total number of outlets to 4,500, adding 2,500 new stores in the next year.
But even Starbucks, on the other hand, has had some success with its WeChat gifting function. The recent success is the limited edition Cat Paw Cup of Starbucks, a cute double-walled cut that takes the shape of cat paw when it’s filled with coffee or milk has become viral since the beginning of this March.
