The withdrawal plan covers more than a quarter of all ES8 units sold
Battery problems for Nio – Chinese manufacturer of electric vehicles, often considered a Tesla challenger in China – which is launching a mass recall of its ES8 model, due to safety issues related to its battery packs.
In particular, the recall concerns 4,803 Nio ES8 vehicles whose battery packs contain NEV-P50 modules manufactured between April 2nd and October 19th of last year. The withdrawal plan covers more than a quarter of all ES8 units sold. At the end of May, Nio had delivered 17,550 ES8s.
The company confirmed that an ES8 caught fire in a parking lot in Wuhan city
According to the Chinese state administration for market regulation, in the most extreme cases the faulty NEV-P50 modules could lead to overheating and spontaneous combustion of the battery pack. To avoid this danger, Nio will supply free replacement battery packs for all affected vehicles.
However, there are already the first cases. Indeed, the Shanghai-based company confirmed on its Sina Weibo that an ES8 caught fire in a parking lot in Wuhan city, the third spontaneous combustion incident in just two months.
Last Monday the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology issued a notice asking EV producers to promptly report to the authority all fire accidents due to vehicles.
