Tencent will implement a Wi-Fi network already operating on the Fuxing projectile trains on the Shanghai-Beijing line
Tencent, the internet giant in China, together with car manufacturer Geely won a joint bid to get 49% of the stake in a branch of China Railway, which provides WiFi on high-speed trains across the country.
To provide wifi solutions and online services on high-speed trains, Tencent Holdings Ltd. and Zhejiang Geely Holding Group will collaborate with the High Speed Network Technology Company, set up in late 2017 by China Railway Corporation.
The companies will increase the number of wifi hotspots throughout the high-speed rail network
The Chinese high-speed rail network is the largest in the world, but plans to reach 38,000 km by 2025. On the Shanghai-Beijing line, Wifi access is already available on new-generation Fuxing bullet trains.
According to a Geely statement, the companies will increase the number of wifi hotspots throughout the high-speed rail network and develop an online platform.
The numbers on these lines are surprising: in 2017, a total of 3.04 billion passenger trips were made on railways, and more than 56 percent of those trips were made on high-speed railways.
