Tencent’s new service aims to curb spending habits out of control among underage players
Tencent Games has a new feature that lets account holders know when a minor player reaches an expense around RMB 500 or higher.
The mechanism, called the “Underage User Game Spending Reminder“, is designed to curb spending habits out of control among underage players. The company said in a press statement that: “After over a year of multiple rounds of research and testing, we have recently launched the ‘underage user game spending reminder’ service. The feature is now in the trial stage”.
Tencent has formed a team of over 200 customer service representatives to run the new services
According to the company statement, for suspected underage high-spending activity on Tencent-owned games, it will try to “take the initiative to intervene and notify the user to pay attention to the potential underage irrational spending behavior.”
Tencent not only programmed simple notifications for account holders, but also trained a team of over 200 customer service representatives to run the new services, contacting paid account holders to remember and confirm payment.
The company stated that it will continue to work to improve communication with paid account holders, in order to help parents manage the spending behavior of their children’s games.
Video game addiction is a phenomenon that is spreading to China
The phenomenon of gambling addiction, especially among minors, is evident in China. Last year, Tencent was criticized by state media for attracting “sick” players from violent games. It is for this reason that the company has decided to introduce an age limit for the players and limit the online gameplay to an hour a day.
Among the most popular video games of Tencent Games are King of Glory, League of Legends, CrossFire, QQ Speed Mobile, Naruto Mobile, Miracle Nikki and Dungeon Fighter Online.
