Xiaomi and Samsung are experiencing a drop in sales in China and globally

The partnership between the two brands, although it may seem strange, actually has its reasons. The collaboration between Xiaomi and Samsung, in fact, comes at a time when the two companies are experiencing a decline in smartphone sales, both globally and in China.

According to the research company Canalys, the market share of Xiaomi smartphones in China has dropped from 13.9% in the second quarter of 2018 to 11.8%. Samsung, meanwhile, has collected a 0.7% share of the Chinese smartphone market in the same quarter, sending around 700,000 units, according to research firm Strategy Analytics.

Among all the winner is however Huawei, the main competitor of Xiaomi and Samsung in China that, on the contrary, has seen an increase in its national market share at the expense of its two rivals. Huawei’s domestic shipments have in fact gone from 28.5 million units in the second quarter of 2018 to 37.3 million in the same quarter of 2019.

Samsung would have outsourced part of its Chinese production to Wintech

Reportedly, Samsung would have cut production and laid-off workers in China: a sign interpreted as a withdrawal from the Chinese market. Furthermore, the South Korean technology giant would have outsourced part of its Chinese production to Wintech, a long-standing supplier for Xiaomi.

Last year, a Samsung spokesman stated that the company was considering introducing the original design manufacturer (ODM) system in China. ODM means a company that designs and produces a product, which is subsequently renamed by another company.
